Sketchbook

There is a process to everything. Every great plan, design, object, product, or image starts with an idea. Sketchbooks are where ideas flourish for the artist. It is also a document of seeing their thought process. There is an inherent raw beauty to sketches, and although some might be very simple in nature, the idea they convey or blueprint they might lay out isn't always. Here are some of mine.

Super exaggerated
These are some more of my "push it to the limit" sketches. These are just mental exercises I do to stretch my imagination. The one with the glasses is based on a real person.
really, really exaggerated
Sometimes in order to get my imagination flowing, I just sketch out some of the most exaggerated faces I can come up with. These aren't real people necessarily, but I am just exercising how far I can push the facial anatomy. This is almost a design excercise, and a lot of animated characters develop from practices like these.

This piece was done for a heavy metal band CD cover......the band never took off, but although morbid, I was happy with the drawing.

I call this a good failure. This is supposed to be Brittney Spears right after she shaved her head....., but I missed on the likeness. I was really happy with the way the drawing was going. but it needs to be correct to be successful. It's good to learn from mistakes. I still want to do a finished, better piece like this as long as she stays famous in her downward spiral.

Tom Cruise

I know this is hard to see, but this is how I started out my Tom Cruise piece. I was just freeflowing ideas and came up with this. The finished product won Studio Piece of the Year in 2006, and can be seen on the Illustration page.
